What about PATROL by Walter Dean Myers? Sadly there are too many parallels between the Vietnam War and the current situation in the Middle East. Walter's free verse makes a powerful statement about the terribleness of fighting in a war and yet he portrays each soldier from both sides of the fence with humanity and compassion. The collages by Ann Grifalconi are equally riveting and intensely evoke the landscape of the "foreign" setting.

PATROL is a picture book that can be used effectively with precocious 8 and 9 year olds, upper elementary grade, middle grade and high school students.
