I sent this message to the originator of the question but after reading that the ccbc is continuing the discussion on war/peace books, I thought it would be helpful perhaps to send it to the whole list.

The Cello of Mr. O by Jane Cutler is about the war in Bosnia as is Gleam and Glow by Eve Bunting. Both are moving and beautiful picture books for older readers due to the theme.
Teaching Tolerance is an excellent quarterly magazine published by the Southern Poverty Law Center: www.teachingtolerance.org. It's free with a contribution to the Center.
There are lots of books that assist in the discussion of violence vs. nonviolence and tolerance for elementary school kids. Hey, Little Ant by Philip Hoose, Sadako by Eleanor Coerr, Mole Music by David McPhail, Whadayamean by John Burningham, The Blues of Flats Brown by Walter Dean Myers, The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, Knight and the Dragon by Tomie DePaola. If you need more suggestions, let me know.
Also good are books helping adults teach children the ways of peace: Cootie Shots ed. by Norma Bowles, Anti-Bias Curriculum by Derman, Young Peacemakers Project Book by Fry-Miller, Peace Works by Fry-Miller, Cooperative Sports and Games Book by Orlick, A Manual on Nonviolence and Children by Judson, Discover the World: Empowering Children to Value Themselves, Others and the Earth ed. by Hopkins, Keeping the Peace by Wichert.
Again, if you need more suggestions, feel free to email me.
Peace, Cathy
