Although I enjoyed BRONX MASQUERADE and have recommended it to those involved with Urban Word (a group that, among other things, conducts workshops for teenagers interested in slamming their poetry), I too had a problem with the stereotyped characters. Namely, the sole white girl who feels compelled to change her name to Natalita (an "Africana" name). I know
(and work with several Bronx students) who claim to be part something else in order to seem more ethnic. However, Miss "Natalita" was ridiculous. I didn't believe her character for a second.

I also read this recently and really enjoyed it. I liked the way the kids' voices were all a little different form each other, a hard thing to do as I write, I imagine. I had some concerns about the characters, however. To me, they seemed a little racially stereotyped...maybe I'm being overly sensitive. What do other folks think?
