I would like to recommend two books by Deborah Ellis: The Breadwinner and Parvana's Journey. This looks at a family living under the Taliban in Kabul and in the second book as refugees. The protagonist is a girl who is able to pass for a boy and help her family survive. This is suitable for readers in fifth or sixth grade and up. A companion book to Samire and Yonaton is Running On Eggs by Anna Levine. The focus here is upon two girls, one Jewish and one Arab, who become members of a track team. This is mroe suited for junior high readers. This is a sad time for all of us but I know it must be hard for children. I hope these books will help. Charlotte Decker

"Samir and Yonaton" : Concerning the question about appropriate for "kids,"
"kids" of what age? "Kids" of what background knowledge? "Kids" with a teacher or librarian who has sufficient background in the situation in Israel?

These are the questions that need to be asked--and answered.

In the good old days, "Elementary School Library Collection" could have answered the questions about age appropriate titles. How about
"Friderich" by Richter? And there are, alas, many, many more because there are always wars begun by the old (well, W.W. II was a somewhat different story) and fought by the young that affecteed the very young--Haugaard wrote a book about what happened to various Italian children in "The Little Fishes." The U.S. Civil War is far too long ago to seem "real" to today's children. But W.W. II, Korea, Vietnam can provide many titles.

Maybe we could just include a biography of George W. Bush to show how someone who went AWOL from the Texas Air National Guard started a war with his gang.
