Two books:

Manneken Pis by Vladimir Radunsky. We'd read this picture book numerous times earlier this year. A couple of days ago, when my 3-year-old asked what war is, we were able to answer the question in part through the experiences of the little boy in the book. It's really masterful.

Before Their Time by Robert Kotlowitz A World War Two memoir of an 18-year-old college freshman drafted in time to participate in the Battle of the Bulge, where he nearly lost his life. It's a wonderful study of how a civilian is transformed into a soldier. I thought at the time I read it--a few years ago--that it was in many ways a perfect introduction to the realities of war for teen readers. It was published through Knopf's adult division and is available in trade paperback.
