This month we'll continue our discussion of the 2003 ALA Award winners, beginning with a discussion of the Coretta Scott King Awards. A full listing of the awards, and some additional information, can be found at: http://www.ala.org/srrt/csking/winners_2003.html
Let's begin with a discussion of the books cited for illustration. The winner in this category was "Talkin' about Bessie: The Story of Aviator Elizabeth Coleman," illustrated by E. B. Lewis, and written by Nikki Grimes (Orchard/Scholastic). Two Honor Books were names, "Rap A Tap Tap: Here's Bojangles-Think of That," written and illustrated by Leo and Dianne Dillon (Blue Sky/Scholastic) and "Visiting Langston" illustrated by Bryan Collier and written by Willie Perdomo.
It's interesting that each of these is a picture book dealing with a historical figure and yet the approaches and art styles are all so different from each other. I especially appreciate E. B. Lewi's watercolor illustrations, and the attention to historical detail in his illustrations of key events in Bessie Coleman's life.
Has anyone else had an opportunity to see any of the CSK Illustrator books? Please let us know what you think!
