I have used SPIDER AND THE FLY with children in our elementary school. The preschool class is always clamoring for something scary and this fit the bill nicely. They loved looking at the illustrations and noting all of the details. It also prompted a spontaneous discussion about talking to stragners and what might happen if you do and who exactly is a stranger anyway and on and on. The 2nd had more trouble witht the story line than the preschoolers did but once we got that on track they were delighted by the illustrations. The 6th grade was amazed at what could be done with black and white.
I read Mr. Pinkney's NOAH'S ARK for the children's sermon at church. the children were enraptured by the new depth the illustrations brought to a story they had heard many times, and I saw many adults looking at the book after the service.

Several of your comments about "My Friend Rabbit" suggest that although this book's Caldecott medal took many adults by surprise, the book itself is being well received by children. Have any of you shared any of the 2003 Caldecott Honor Books with children, and if so, what was their response? What is your reaction to the Honor Books? The three Caldecott Honor Books are:
"The Spider the the Fly" illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi, written by Mary Howitt (Simon & Schuster)
"Hondo & Fabian" illustrated and written by Peter McCarty (Henry Holt)
"Noah's Ark" illustrated and written by Jerry Pinkney (SeaStar/North-South)
Let us know what you think, Merri
