Well, I work in a K-8 school and I would be hesitant to even offer it to 8th graders. There are certainly some who are mature enough to appreciate it, but the audience is very limited.
Hole in My Life is a perfect book for high school. Most 9th graders are 14, so if you want to argue the age range for the award, I guess you can say the Sibert committee made a very marginal choice. If I were a high school librarian, however, I would be more inclined to recommend the book to older teens--juniors or seniors.
