Hoot" was the pick of our "Club Newbery" book discussion group (by a very narrow margin). Our kids liked the fast pace and the way the author "put a good picture in my mind of what was happening." I thought Hiassen did a great job of getting us right into the characters' heads. With the main character we didn't get a lot of pondering or self analysis or reflection...more immediate feelings and reactions that seemed authentic and very kid-like. Some of our kids also appreciated the inclusion of adults as parallel characters, especially since those adults were kind of child-like in some ways. I'm usually skeptical about adult novelists, but Hiassen's style actually seemed very fresh to me.
