In response to Kathleen's questions about "Hoot", I found it a good read. The protagonist is believable and well developed. "Mullet Fingers" is a bit of a "Maniac Magee" larger-than-life character, but keeps the story moving. I'm not sure my elementary students will get the irony and subtle meanings, but they will enjoy the action that moves the plot.

"Surviving the Applewhites" is the strongest story, in my opinion, of the honor books. I fell in love with that crazy, creative family and cheered for Jake as he warmed to their enthusiasm for life. All of the honor books are well written and engaging, however.

Avi has created a terrific story in "Crispin" and he had me turning pages as fast as I could, even though there is strong predictability in the plot. He is a really story teller and moves the story quickly through the action. His characters are strong and never suffer from the action of the plot. He has certainly proved to a very versatile author and well-loved by my students. Sue McGown Librarian, St. John's School Houston, TX smcgown at sjs.org
