What impressed me about Crispin was Avi's portrayal of the medieval mindset. He captured what it was like to actually live in the Middle Ages more than any other historical fiction book written for children that I have read, and how important the influence of the Church and one's place in society were. In essence, the time & place were a character in the book (for me), along with Crispin, Bear and all the others.
