Hoot was a good story, but I disagree about the addition of adult characters. The point-of-view changes seemed to slow down the plot; I found myself wishing to get back to the main thread each time the author stepped into the head of one of the adults.

The strongest part of Hoot, for me, was the mystery surrounding Mullet Fingers. Right from page one, Hiaasen grabbed my attention the way Mullet Fingers nabs a fish. Who is this barefoot boy? I wondered. The mystery unfolded at just the right pace to keep me reading.
