Personal experience as a Newbery Award Committee Member from last year:
I actually tried to STAY away from a lot of online discussions. I wanted to form my own opinions, and listened to what the other 14 people on my committee had to say about the books.
I only "slightly" followed reviews and online discussions to make sure that no major issues were raised and that no excellent titles were overlooked...
But, everyone works differently...
