SCOTT O'DELL AWARD WINNER Trouble Don't Last by Shelley Pearsall (Knopf) is the winner of the 2003 Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. The award is presented to a children's or young adult book published in English by a U.S. publisher and set in the Americas. The members of the award committee are Ann Carlson, Hazel Rochman (chair), and Roger Sutton.

This powerful realistic first novel is told in the voice of Samuel, 11, who is forced to run with Harrison, an old slave, from the Kentucky plantation to Ohio in 1859, and finally to freedom in Canada. It's a thrilling escape story, but there's no romanticism about the Underground Railroad. The runaways are brave; but they're also rough, mean, and frightened. They encounter prejudice and hardship as well as heroism on their journey to freedom. Always there's the memory of daily life under slavery and the anguish of family separation.

Established by the late writer Scott O'Dell in 1984 and chaired by Zena Sutherland until her death last year, the award comes with a $5000 prize. More information about the award and past winners can be found at www.scottodell.com.
