It was exciting to get to see Mary Stoiber's voting grid for best book of the year because the process was so inclusive of the literature's intended audience! The review outlet that I manage requires that all books be
"kid-tested, teacher approved" in order to receive a review. I invite this community to visit the new Chapman Awards announcement page, commending what are some of the best K-6 classroom read-alouds of the year. The 2002 winners were:

Picture Books Whatever Wanda Wanted by Jude Wisdom (Penguin Putnam) Hare and Tortoise Race to the Moon by Oliver J. Corwin (Abrams) Yo, Vikings! by Judith Byron Schachner (Dutton)

Fiction

A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin (Scholastic) Gooney Bird Greene by Lois Lowry, illustrated by Middy Thomas (Houghton Mifflin)

Non-Fiction

Thank You, Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving by Laurie Halse Anderson, illustrated by Matt Faulkner (Simon & Schuster) Love to Langston by Tony Medina, illustrated by R. Gregory Christie (Lee & Low)

Further information (including criteria and reviews of the winning titles) is available at http://www.planetesme.com/chapman.html, where there is also a link to a "Best Books" list of the other spectacular titles that were considered. Hope you enjoy, and I hope we all survive this delicious tension about the impending ALA announcements! May the best books win!

Happy reading,
