I agree with all of Marc's excellent thoughts about research, bibliographies and footnotes. Footnotes and back matter (among other things) gives those of us who write nonfiction an opportunity to illuminate some of the choices we make in the course of writing a book. Research is deliciously addictive, and like most addicts I'm always looking for new ways to share my habit. On a more pragmatic level, however, we also might remember the recent plagiarism troubles of several authors of popular adult nonfiction. Writers who don't provide thorough bibliographies and footnotes can find themselves on the receiving end of unpleasant legal correspondence. The challenge lies in trying to make necessary documentation as interesting to the reader as it was to us.
