The five books we've been discussing this month could not have been chosen more precisely to illustrate the difficulty of picking a single award winner. Even the two which share settings in the future, rather than the present or past, are so different in style, substance, and reader appeal that it is a bit hard to imagine just what the judges were comparing. The five might also be presented as a package to illustrate the diversity of American experience. What a treat for discussion! All five books feature distinguished writing and thought-provoking substance. I thought Hush, though, had not had the kind of editing it deserved. Were other readers disturbed by inconsistencies? How can a child in the witness protection program keep her diaries? Why does a mother who doesn't celebrate birthdays (for religious reasons) give her daughter a birthday coconut cake? And just how much time HAS passed? It is January on p. 166. On p. 171
"seven months have passed since we left Denver." On p. 173 it's still snowing and neighbors are finally moving in. "For over a year, we've been the only ones in this building."
