I agree with Grace Ruth about I Stink! It will surely be a longstanding favorite among preschoolers, with good reason. Wake Up Big Barn by Suzanne Chitwood (Cartwheel), also aimed at very young children, features magnificent torn-paper collage illustrations and a lively, fun-to-read-aloud text.
In a very different mode, I like the thoughtful and handsome Three Questions written and illustrated by Jon Muth that retells a story from Tolstoy. The concepts become accessible to kids in this presentation.
Dog Food by Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers combines outrageous puns with photographs of fruits and vegetables made wittily to resemble dogs. The broccoli poodle and bok choy beagle are extremely funny.
Also dog-related, and also funny, is Mark Teague?s Dear Mrs. LaRue, an account of Ike the dog?s stint in obedience school, with his usual vivid and animated pictures.
And one more: Bob Graham?s sweet Jethro Bird, Fairy Child. Old fashioned yet fresh and completely endearing.
