Any more favorites?

I have been savoring everyone's comments about their favorite books of the year. Whether it's affirming a book already on my "personal favorites" list, or giving me new titles to add to my "to-read" list, all of your remarks are appreciated, particularly because of the passion and enthusiasm evident in your opinions.

I'm always pleased to find books of nonfiction that present science topics that are easily accessible to children through a combination of clear writing, excellent photographs and great format. Two of my favorites this year are both published by Houghton Mifflin as part of the Scientists in the Field series: "Secrets of Sounds: Studying the Calls and Songs of Whales, Elephants, and Birds" by April Pulley Sayre and "Project Ultra Swan" by Elinor Osborn.

"Secrets of Sound" describes the work of three acoustic biologists who have done innovative research on the communications of whales, elephants, and birds. "Project UltraSwan" relates how trumpeter swans from upstate New York were trained to follow human-piloted ultralights to a winter home on the Chesapeake Bay, in an effort to restore the birds' original migration route. Both books successfully give a sense of the dedication and enthusiasm of the scientists involved in the projects, and how the work inches forward, with many delays and setbacks along the way. (I especially appreciated "Project UltraSwan," given the current project involving Whooping Crane migration from Wisconsin to Florida, which involves many of the same organizations and methodology.)

I know this coming week is a busy time for many of us, but if you have a spare moment at your computer, please continue sharing your favorite books of 2002 for children and young people.
