Susan, I can answer your question (Does anyone know how it happened that two members of the Caldecott committee work in the same library system?) for one particular committee - the 2001 Caldecott Award committee which I chaired.

Every effort is made by the ALSC nominating committee and the ALSC president who makes the last 7 appointments to provide a balance of geographic area, type of librarian, etc. on each award committee. During the year 2000, while our Caldecott committee met at the annual conference, one of the members mentioned she wanted to move from the academic arena back into the public library field. When an opening occurred in the city of another committee member, she passed that information along, and by the end of the year, they were both in the same city, although not in the same system. One was in the county system and one in the city system. It was simply a case of creative networking.
