To continue the discussion of our favorite books of the year, I would have to say that one of mine was "Shattering Glass" by Gail Giles. It certainly hooked me from the beginning and the "incident" in the novel felt as inevitable as the ending in a Greek tragedy. It didn't turn away from its subject or suffer from a "cop-out" ending.

On a softer note I found Graham McNamee's "Sparks" to be a thoughtful exploration of a slow-learner's world. It has many moments of poignancy, and some wonderful laughs.

On a fantasy note, I'd pick "Feather Boy" by Nicky Singer. I have always loved books that are ground in reality, but somehow hover over the edge of fantasy. It's such a fine line to walk and I felt Singer did it quite well.
