Move over CHOO CHOO, LITTLE TOOT, MIKE MULLIGAN'S STEAM SHOVEL... Kate and Jim McMullan have brought us another memorable machine, the garbage truck in I STINK! (HarperCollins). I love the narration by the truck and the creative manner in which the text is placed on the double page spreads. Lots of action and expression. And the inclusion of an alphabet of trash is very clever. Lots of fun for the 4-7 crowd. Another favorite is Leo & Diane Dillon's RAP A TAP TAP. What a wonderful, lively introduction to Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. The staccato of the text and the clever way the artists have portrayed the dancer's legs and feet in motion are perfect for the subject. Among the many good fiction titles I've read a few (besides my absolute favorite, Framer's HOUSE OF THE SCORPION) stand out. Ron Koertge's STONER & SPAZ (wish there had been a more sensitive title for this) introduces two teens, one with cerebral palsy and one who smokes pot, who form an unusual short-lived friendship, yet one that helps them both to grow. A thought-provoking story with characters worth getting to know, and some humor to boot. Sylvia Waugh's EARTHBORN is a worthy companion to her SPACE RACE. This time an alien family is recalled, and the daughter, who was born on earth, decides she has to stay here. Her parents, especially her father, want to return to Ormingat. How Nesta decides to deal with the dilemma makes for an enjoyable, fast-moving tale.
I look forward to hearing what others have enjoyed.
