My favorite book this year is David Shannon's "Duck on a Bike". I love the saturated colors, and the expressions on the faces of the barnyard animals. Kids have really enjoyed this book -- the humor is right on target for them, and they love to explore the details, especially the scene where all the animals are riding bikes--and if you look closely, you'll see that each animal has chosen a bike to match their personalities revealed earlier in the book. The book is full of movement, and the different perspectives place the reader inside the story.
Another wonderful book is Paul Zelinsky's "Knick Knack Paddywhack". I have to admit that I heard him give a talk about how the book was produced, and as a result was quite impressed. There are so many fun details to look for, such as items in each illustration that rhyme with the number on that page. The moving parts are truly amazing (and the work that went into them boggles the mind).
Both are fun books with great illustrations.
