I'm curious as to what books people have found that do portray different kinds of families. We've had mention of Arnold Adoff, Bob Graham and Vera B. Williams, and the titles "Everywhere Babies" and "A Child's Calendar." Are there other books or authors and illustrators out there you especially appreciate?

Eve Bunting is one writer who accurately depicts contemporary families, and I am a HUGE fan of her work - probably because many of her stories are set in Los Angeles, where I grew up, and because her stories are so true to life. The family in Smoky Night consists of a boy, his working mother, and their cat. Fly Away Home is the story of a homeless single father and son who sleep in an airport. Two young boys are left in the care of their neighbor in Your Move since their single mother must work to support them. These are books I highly recommend - especially to anyone who has/works with children. While not all single-parent/inner city families struggle as Ms. Bunting's characters do, it is important for others to be aware that these situations are the reality of some.

Another book that offers a wonderful familial depiction is Pam Munoz Ryan's Esperanza Rising. At the beginning of this story, Esperanza lives a privileged life with her parents in Mexico. But when Esperanza's father dies, she and her mother must move to the U.S. and work as laborers. Yet another great read!
