Definitely a timeless topic, from Oliver Twist to Harry Potter. During this family discussion, I especially think of Spinelli's Newbery honor book, MANIAC MAGEE. A homeless orphan sheds light on what it means to have a family as he travels from one family setting to another. He runs away from one family--his home with an aunt and uncle who never speak. He befriends an African-American family from one side of town, lives for a while with a white family from the other side. Oh. And a third family--the elderly groundskeeper by the baseball diamond. And maybe a fourth family? The mother and baby moose at the zoo! Of course, MANIAC MAGEE is a masterpiece that works on many levels, but I like the way it illuminates family and home.
