The National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (NCCIL, pronounced
"nickel"), located in Abilene, Texas, is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) museum that organizes exhibits of originals from children's picture book art. The NCCIL's first major touring exhibition was in 1997; a total of seventeen exhibits have been mounted. The purpose of the NCCIL is to honor the work of some of the best of children's picture book artists, and to entice children and adults into the world of art and literature. The NCCIL is always free, including the educational, docent-led tours taken by thousands of area school children. The touring classes are given at least one free book illustrated by the exhibiting artist (and usually the elementary school libraries receive a copy), plus a free special art activity to complete at school. Currently the NCCIL's gallery features works by Donald Crews, his wife Ann Jonas, and their daughter, Nina Crews. The next exhibit features the varied work of Robert Sabuda (opening March 6th, 2003); other 2003 NCCIL exhibitions include Eric Carle and Peter Sis. Please watch for a NCCIL exhibit in your area. For information about renting a NCCIL exhibit or for other information, check the website at www.nccil.org (it is a recently updated site and has numerous typos--sorry), call the NCCIL at 915.673.4586, or contact me, Becky McDonald (915.698.3228 or beckymcd at camalott.com ).
