Your mention of the librarians being intent upon children seeing themselves in children's books reminded me of the speech Jean Karl gave in the late 1960 (from which that phrase has come). She said that children have the right to see themselves AND OTHERS in books for children. We've kept Jean's quote ever-present here as we evaluate and purchase books.
