Merri Lindgren asked, "What books can you recommend that highlight sibling relationships?" I just finished reading HUSH, by Jacqueline Woodson, which is up this evening for the National Book Award. The two sisters, so close in age, embody apparently opposite reactions to the pain and isolation of being thrust into the witness protection program. As the novel progresses, I found that what they really had was opposite ways of coping with very similar reactions. In spite of almost unrelenting sadness throughout much of the book, Ms. Woodson still inserts the humor of petty sibling clashes and the warmth of unexpected flashes of connection.
