I LOVE the Swallows and Amazons books. Thank you for mentioning them. It's true that the siblings who start off the series do take on traditional roles, but to me, the two sibs that they meet and have great adventures with (Nancy and her sister, whose name I can't remember) are equally important main characters. And Nancy, who takes on the role of the Pirate Captain, is decidely a true hero! She has most of the ideas, although of course everyone plays an important role, even the baby! She is totally intrepid. I was so excited to find this series, which is very long and each book in the series is lengthy and thus satisfying, and I highly recommend it to people who do not want problem novels or modern depressing stuff, but just like a good long read. These books aren't for everyone; I couldn't interest my daughters in them, but they may have been too old by the time I found out about the books. Age 9 is probably about the right age, depending on the child. Some of these books are available in used bookstores and I think they were reissued not too long ago.
