I apologize for being late with this posting. I am the school librarian at a K-5 school with a highly diverse population. We have children from all over the world, many multiracial children and families, many African-American children, and many children from families with gay/lesbian parents. We own most of the books that have been published with gay/lesbian characters, and unfortunately, many of them are not very appealing. The book that has been most successful (deservedly, in my opinion) at the intermediate level is Bruce Coville's Skull of Truth, an engaging fantasy story with an important character who is gay. This is not an "issues" book--it's a good story with a character who is gay, and is often read aloud by classroom teachers. If you don't know this book, I highly recommend it. As a resource, GLSEN's (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) Booklink might be worth a look. It is found at www.glsen.org--click on Booklink. It is also available in pamphlet form from GLSEN, 121 West 27th St., Suite 804, NY, N, 10001. June Locke Belle Sherman El. School Ithaca, NY
