Louise Erdrich's The Birchbark House and Grandmother's Pigeon as well as Cynthia Leitich Smith's Indian Shoes wrap me in stories of loving families. The characters are complex, the situations are specific, and the reader gets a sense of the universal in all of us. Good reads!
