my ten-year-later "sequel" to black is brown in tan: all the colors of the race...........and my obviously-too-subtle biracial family and child and grandma and cemetery plot in hard to be six......and virginia's extraordinary arilla sundown.........a family black and amerindian and a young girl coming to terms with those settling identities as well as other aspects of her young life.........and the , in my opinion, complex and magnificent magical adventures of pretty pearl.......where a female "god" is created to stand alongside john henry and john de conquer.....and this female who is at once a girl and her own mother,,,,,,a 200+ pages novel for young readers from the "old and original" harper's.............................arnold adoff
and may i add...as with the society as a whole....where economic issues are the crucial ones............(.is there anything in the kid's belly before he looks at any book............).and so on now for far too long........we are beginning to see institutions such as lee and low and jump at the sun...................and a larger smattering of "nonwhite" editors.here and there.....but the territorial imperative of american publishing is still not....by even a longshot....reflecting the demographics and and the realities of this parallel culture country.................please don't talk to me about individual librarians not buying individual books when we work within a perhaps-slightly-loosening-but-still-controlled institutionally racist industry and literature and culture.........................who is old enough to remember the wondrous pearl bailey standing and singing
"tired"..............the struggle continues.................arnold adoff
