One of my favorite books about other types of families is "Chicago Blues" by Julie Reece Deaver. This short gem of a book focuses on a seventeen-year-old college girl, an art student, who is suddenly thrust into the role of parent when her feisty eleven-year-old sister comes to live with her in Chicago. The two sisters work to redefine their roles and create a new family. Parts of the book are heartbreaking; other parts are filled with humor. My eighth graders loved this story.
