Perhaps one reason why books about orphans are so popular is that most children fear losing their parents. And orphans in books frequently have a special independence that "parented" children don't have. Many have to struggle to find some kind of family substitute or even to survive -- I'm reminded especially of Liza Ketchum's ORPHAN JOURNEY HOME, but of course the tradition goes way, way back -- Dickens -- even Alcott, whose orphans or near-orphans in LITTLE MEN find a special alternative "family" at Plumfield.
