Kathleen Horning wrote asking, "I'm curious as to what books people have found that do portray different kinds of families."

A recent book that I just bought for our libraries protrays several different kinds of families. The White Swan Express: A Story About Adoption by Jean Davies Okimoto and Elaine M. Aoki and illustrated by Meilo So, is four stories in one about US families adopting four Chinese girls. A Caucasian couple, an Asian couple, a single mother and two women are shown in four different homes as the prepare and leave on the trip to China. They are together in China as they meet their daughters to be and go through the formalities. The four new families then return home, keeping in touch over the years. It is so nice to see the different kinds of families that result in this book.

The illustrations by Meilo So suit the story so very well. She is an illustrator that perhaps could have been discussed last month. Her watercolors convey so much with just a few brush stokes.

This is a book well worth taking a look at.
