I don't think we talked this month about "Hope Was Here," by Joan Bauer. I just read it this past month and absolutely loved it. This author is brilliant! The book was funny, engaging, a great read all around. It was a triumphant book for me to read in that the emphasis was not on Hope being abandoned by her mom as a child but rather on how, in spite of that, she grows up to be such a wonderfun teen. The old cliche of "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade" comes thru the book in the character of Hope. Her aunt steps in and becomes Hope's mom and eventually marries the most unlikely type of fellow who turns out to be just the right father for Hope. I loved the book because it didn't water down any of the pain an abandoned child feels BUT it didn't dwell on it so much that it becomes the entire focus of the book. The book was on hope and about hope as the main character was so aptly named.
