There is one picture book that recently came out which shows an extended family immersed in culture and history while at the same time depicting the struggles and special place of someone in the middle, called Smack, Dab in the Middle. The author/illustrator, Anita Riggio, spoke at the Wisconsin SCBWI conference this year about her own celebration of extended family. It's one thing we don't always consider when dealing with children of single parents, blended families, etc. They have extended family that may, in fact, be a rich source of love and pride.
