[CCBC-Net] Constructing Families

Monica's mention of E. Nesbit's sibling family groups reminded me of Arthur Ransome's wonderful books -- for example, Swallow and Amazons and the other books featuring the Walker children in which Susan and John Walker act in effect as parents to their younger siblings, Roger and Titty, and take a comforting semi?ult role in relation to other child characters. (Today these books must seem sexist to many people, but even though the kids, especially Susan and John, tend to fall into traditional gender roles -- Susan as cook, for example -- their competence and resourcefulness mitigates that -- at least for me.)
