Animal Families

We've tended to focus on human families, but there are some wonderful animal families, too, especially in picture books. I had read Stellaluna to my kindergarten-aged foster son countless times before I realized why he was so drawn to it: Stellaluna had landed (literally) in foster care! Some of my favorite pictures of parent-child relationships are also non-human. Can't we all relate to Koala Lou and her loving, but distracted mom, or Frances and her parents when they encounter bumps in the road (Bedtime for Frances is my favorite), or the pig family in Mrs. Pig Gets Cross and Other Stories? The Mouse and His Child comes to mind, too, as a family story, once we look beyond human characters. Faith Brautigam Gail Borden Public Library Elgin, IL
