I'd like to add to the praise for Hiassen's Hoot. I'm reading it aloud to my sixth graders right now. While it feels to me as if I'm reading an adult book
(far too much of the adult detective) they are loving it. I suspect they, too, think it's kind of adult, which adds to its appeal. At the same time they are completely captivated by the believable middle school world and the child characters. It is a pleasure to see experienced story-tellers like Hiassen turn out something for younger readers. When it works, their expertise shows.
