Invitation: Jane Addams Book Awards Event - Oct. 18

Was there ever a time when books about peace and justice were more necessary, more wanted?
You're encouraged to join others who are also interested in books with peace and justice themes & topics on Friday, Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m. in New York City. That's when the 2002 Jane Addams Children's Book Award and Honor Book recipients will be formally acknowledged by the presentation of awards and cash prizes.
The event will take place at 777 United Nations Plaza (2nd Floor) on the corner of 44th St. & 1st Ave. We'll gather in a room overlooking the wondrous view of the colorful flags of many nations flying over the United Nations buildings, a grand backdrop for the festivities.
It's important to let our host know if you're planning to be there and to indicate how many others are coming with you. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Ms. Theresa Graham, Executive Director of the Jane Addams Peace Association by phoning 212h2?30, or by sending an e-mail message to japa at igc.org
Please pass this message along to everyone who might be interested.
Each of the honored authors and artists will be present to respond in person. These honored book creators are:
1. Beverley Naidoo who is coming from England to accept an award for her novel "The Other Side of Truth" published in the United States by HarperCollins.
2. Rachna Gilmore, who lives in Ottawa, Canada, will be with us to receive an honor book citation for her novel "A Group of One" published in the United States by Henry Holt.
3. Virginia Euwer Wolff will travel from Portland, Oregon, to receive an honor book citation for her novel "True Believer" published by Atheneum
/ Simon & Schuster.
4. New York City resident Doreen Rappaport will receive an award for writing the text of "Martin's Big Words" published by Jump at the Sun Books, an imprint of Hyperion.
5. Bryan Collier also lives in the NYC area, and he will receive an award for creating the artwork in "Martin's Big Words."
6. Vera B. Williams is also a NYC resident, and she will be present to receive an honor book citation for her writing and artwork in "Amber Was Brave, Essie Was Smart" published by Greenwillow / HarperCollins.
Book signing and a reception will follow the presentations. Thanks to Bank St. Books, the honored books will be available for sale that afternoon.
Ms. Diane McWhorter, author of the adult book "Carry Me Home: Birmingham, Alabama - The Climactic Battle of the Civil Rights Revolution" will participate in the celebratory event. So will Linda Wasserman, the national president of the Jane Addams Peace Association, and Theresa Graham, Executive Director of the Jane Addams Peace Association. People associated with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom will be there, too. I'll be there, as will many others in the children's book community. Plan to Join our colleagues and friends who will come to offer congratulations to the authors, artists, editors, and publishers of the fine 2002 Jane Addams Children's Book Award Winners and Honor Books. Absolutely everyone who is interested is welcome to attend. Tell others!
The Jane Addams Children's Book Awards are given annually to children's books published during the previous year which, as well as meeting conventional standards for literary and artistic excellence, most effectively address themes or topics promoting peace, social justice, world community, and/or equality of the sexes and all races. (Juneau, Alaska). Regional reading and discussion groups participated with many of the committee members throughout the evaluation and selection process for the 2002 awards.
