I'm not sure if this has been mentioned because I just joined the discussion; if so, Joy Harjo and her book The Good Luck Cat are worth many mentions as welcome new voices in chidren's literature. The Good Luck Cat chronicles the lives of a cat with 9+ lives from the viewpoint of the girl who loves the cat.
Subtley woven in are the details of the girl's community and extended family that show us that she is Native American. Told in few, perfectly-chosen words, the story is a circle moved along by the cat's misadventures and held together by the girl's affection and care for it. Joy Harjo, a published Native American poet for adults (and a saxophonist), has moved from writing for adults to writing for children excellently. Has she published anything else for children? Hope so and hope someone on this listserv can tell me what those books are.
