[CCBC-Net] New Voices

I have an emerging author whose work I would like to share. I believe I spoke of him last year as well when we were discussing new voices. I am a huge fan of young adult author Ben Mikaelsen. He is up and coming, and I think as his writing develops, he will become the next Gary Paulsen. His cover art on his older books are not as appealing to my middle readers, but once I move them to the words - they are moved as well. Donald Gallo has even spoken of his work Petey has outstanding. I would highly recommend Petey and Touching Spirit Bear. These are my favorites and my students' favorites as well. Male reluctant readers especially respond to Touching Spirit Bear. Check him out!

I'm really enjoying this conversation, in part because of the great suggestions for titles to read. Also because it is important to remember that every writer starts somewhere, and I think it takes great courage and hard work to create a quality first book for this crowd.

I'd like to offer two other types of new voices that I've recently enjoyed.

First, established picture book authors writing first novels. Kate Banks' Dillon Dillon comes to mind. So does Bonnie Geisert (collaborator with etcher/illustrator Arthur Geisert on Haystack, Prairie Town and others) with her first novel Prairie Summer.

And what about writers of adult fiction that started to write for young adults. David Almond (first mentioned in this discussion) is just that. I also really enjoyed Carl Hiaasen's Hoot.
