I want to echo mentioning Kate Banks. She has established herself as a perceptive picture book writer who is tuned in to young children's curiosity and discovery. But she takes "discovery" to a new height in her first novel, Dillon Dillon. When the title character (yes, he has the same first and last names) learns the explanation for his name and becomes "one" with a family of loons, readers will be swept away by the writing and intensity of characterization. I will simply say, I was blown away by this book. Banks' talent for writing for older readers is, I suspect, at the fledgling stage. I eagerly look forward to her next novel.
