I've been interested in this discussion of Raschka's work. Recently Live Oak Media has issued excellent renditions of the Parker book, Mysterious Thelonious, Simple Gifts - and just this month, Giant Steps - in book/cassette packages. The cassettes pair the reading with appropriate selections in the music to provide a truly wonderful listening experience.
On the Parker tape, Chris himself explains how he listened to Parker's music while creating the book, then the book is read with the music and without the music so listeners can compare the experiences. Arnie Cardillo, who directs these recordings and is the owner of Live Oak, puts a lot of effort into finding the right voices and producing the tapes in a very professional way. I use them with my children's lit. classes highly recommend them as extensions for the books.
I think one of the brightest rising stars in picture book art is Jon J Muth. His newest book, The Three Questions, is beautifully executed. His illustrations for Eric Kimmel's Gerson's Monster a few years back were evocative and powerful. He's definitely one to watch.
