I'm really enjoying this conversation, in part because of the great suggestions for titles to read. Also because it is important to remember that every writer starts somewhere, and I think it takes great courage and hard work to create a quality first book for this crowd.
I'd like to offer two other types of new voices that I've recently enjoyed.
First, established picture book authors writing first novels. Kate Banks' Dillon Dillon comes to mind. So does Bonnie Geisert (collaborator with etcher/illustrator Arthur Geisert on Haystack, Prairie Town and others) with her first novel Prairie Summer.
And what about writers of adult fiction that started to write for young adults. David Almond (first mentioned in this discussion) is just that. I also really enjoyed Carl Hiaasen's Hoot.
