The imagine from Virginia's work that is most vividly painted in my mind is of M.C. Higgins sitting atop his flagpole on Sarah's Mountain, scanning the valleys below and dreaming of escape from his fear of his family's being covered by the slagheap. I think this book still represents the ultimate originality and yet accessibility of Virginia's work for young readers. Joan Atkinson
