I agree with Nick's recommendation of Carl Hiassen's "Hoot." I'm usually pretty skeptical of adult authors who try writing for kids, but "Hoot" really worked. He did a great job of creating an original character and capturing his kid's point of view. Neil Gaimon's "Coraline" is another. It's a truly scary book, and we don't see too many of those in children's literature. Yet it's firmly grounded in the world of a very interesting child character.
