This month, we are reflecting on the career of Virginia Hamilton, who died on February 19, 2002.

Hamilton wrote novels, folktales, biographies and histories. Whether she is writing of real lives or invented characters or seamlessly crossing boundaries and weaving new realms of possibility, her writing has the power to hold a reader fast, and to stimulate intellectual, emotional, even visceral responses.

Hamilton won the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in 1992. CCBC Librarian Kathleen T. Horning chaired the United States Board on Books for Young People's (USBBY) nominating committee that selected Hamilton as the U.S nominee for that award.

In an article she wrote for the Summer, 2002, issue of "Riverbank Review," KT reflected on Virginia Hamilton's remarkable body of work. Commenting on Hamilton's characters, she noted that they ranged from the "singular and eccentric" individuals such as Zeely, and Junior Brown, in her early works, to later characters who "became less eccentric, but no less interesting. She exelled at getting inside the heads of ordinary people, and right down into their souls. She was unflinchingly honest in her portrayal of children and teenagers as less-than-perfect heroes, often uncertain, occasionally unkind, and sometimes downright mean."

We invite you to share your thoughts about Hamilton's work throughout this month. Do you have a favorite Hamilton title? Do you find a particular facet of her work--folklore, contemporary novels, historical fiction, fantasy, biography--most compelling? If you are an educator, do you use Hamilton's works in the classroom? Let's explore the work of this remarkable writer.
