Megan's remarks about Virginia Hamilton's amazing success at matching her narrative style to the variety of forms she used caused me to think about how the Hamilton books are appreciated in my own home. I am personally drawn to her novels above all else, but my 9-year-old daughter relishes her folk tales in THE PEOPLE COULD FLY, MANY THOUSAND GONE and (her favorite) HER STORIES. She came across these books on her own, and has read all 3 of them several times. When asked what she enjoyed about them, she said that she liked how many of the stories "are set in real life, but become magical, and you're never quite sure which is which." I'm curious to hear how other children respond to Virginia Hamilton's books, and which titles they especially appreciate.
